TRAVEL GUIDES

OUR GUIDE TO BANGKOK

Exploring the urban landscape of Bangkok is always a thrilling experience and, during our latest visit, we rediscovered the city with a fresh new perspective.

While we had both been to Bangkok multiple times, this trip was particularly special as we were visiting a couple of dear friends who have been immersed in the city, living there for almost seven years now. And, to add to the excitement, they happen to be deeply ingrained in Bangkok's food and beverage industry. With their insider knowledge, we were treated to a full tour of the best local places.

From tucked-away street food stalls to trendy rooftop and eclectic bars, we were shown the pulse of the city's day and night scene, introduced to atmospheres that epitomized Bangkok's diversity.

We decided not to do the typical touristy activities and avoid tourist traps like Khao San Road, as we had done those in previous trips. In this guide, you won’t find the famous temples and popular attractions. Instead, we opted to cover more local areas that you might not find in other websites.

This trip (only a weekend short) was a refreshing change. It allowed us to witness the authentic daily life of Bangkok residents - an experience we're excited to share below!

Charoenkrung, our favorite neighborhood without a doubt, is the oldest street in Bangkok, now transformed into a vibrant and hip area. As you stroll along, passing by numerous mechanic stores, you'll suddenly discover hidden gems like charming coffee shops and unique houses to visit, creating a blend of the old and the new within this eclectic district.

CHAROEN KRUNG AREA

Att19 is a hidden gallery we stumbled upon during a walk. It is housed in a heritage building with gigantic ancient wooden doors opening up to a space adorned with a curated collection of Japanese art, objects, vintage clothing and more. The high-ceilinged area, surrounded by a tree-filled courtyard, is so serene. We were dreaming of living there!

So Heng Tai Mansion is a 19th century house tied to Thai nobility under King Rama III. Today, it is home to his descendants, the Poshyachinda family, and stands as one of the last traditional Chinese houses in Bangkok, proudly claiming the title of the city's oldest private residence. You can visit it during the day and take a little rest from the heat.

What to Taste

Charoen Krung, Bangkok

Arriving in Bangkok, our first stop was dinner at Jua, tucked at the end of a small alley—and it absolutely exceeded any expectations! They offer fresh sashimi straight from Japan, exquisite meats, delicious sandos and a memorable uni pasta. The place is intimate, fun and much cheaper than what you would pay in Europe for this quality. Please visit!

Sathon, Bangkok

€€

Another must! Located in a lively street (but spotting it can be a challenge as there is no sign on the door). Run by a chef of Puerto Rican and Chinese heritage, the daily-changing menu surprises and delights—think taco dumplings, wagyu, and the most insane brussel sprouts you’ll ever try (please order them!). What sets them apart is their extensive and exceptional selection of wine. On the weekends, the vibe is on with a DJ sharing a bit of disco vibes.

The place to be for fancy Thai-Chinese cuisine. Chef Pam, who's basically a superstar chef in Asia, serves her dishes in a narrow five-floor restored building in Chinatown (which used to be a herbal medicine shop). The place is in this cool, restored building that used to be a Chinese herbal medicine shop from 1910.  People have been talking about it non-stop since it opened in 2021 and keeps winning awards… A Must Try!

Nam Heng Li is another charming spot that has stood the test of time. Housed in an old establishment that has been running for generations, the experience is akin to visiting a Thai grandmother's house. With only five small tables, it's an intimate setting where you can enjoy a simple yet heartwarming kaya toast and thai tea.

Charoen Krung, Bangkok

Baam Chi Cha is this adorable coffee spot with the cutest decor. They prepare the best iced teas—we tried the Peach and Lychee and Lemon one (their signature), both were so delicious and really refreshing. Plus, there's this little room upstairs where you can chill and get a cool view of the neighborhood.

Squeeze through a tiny passage behind an ordinary door and you will find Alonetogether. “Nothing is certain but death and tax” is the message you’ll see in front of the set of stairs leading you to the entrance. TAX bar was founded as a response to the lack of financial support from the Thai government during the pandemic. Frustrated with the treatment of bars, they turned leftover alcohol into vinegar, crafting unique cocktails like Riesling Vinegar and Issan Coco. The menu states, “you can tax all our booze, but you cannot tax our vinegars.
