TRAVEL GUIDES

OUR GUIDE TO PRIORAT

The trip to the Priorat region was a special gift for Nils' birthday. We embarked on this adventure for a long weekend in the month of July, precisely during a time when we were in dire need of relaxation.

The Priorat region is located in Tarragona and is an essential destination for all wine lovers. The landscape is incredible, with valleys, mountains, and small vineyards as far as the eye can see. At every turn, it felt like we had stepped into a scene from a movie . If you ask Nils, he will tell you it is like being in Lord of the Rings.

Due to the climate, which is dry and scorching in the summer and cold in the winter, and the challenging terrains, wine production is very limited. This makes the wine from the area even more special. The harvest is carefully tended with great care, and the wines of Priorat are crafted through entirely manual processes, holding the prestigious Denominación de Origen (DOC) designation.

However, the biggest surprise was that we felt completely alone. We were expecting larger crowds considering the breathtaking beauty of the spot and the proximity to Barcelona. Instead, the place was extremely calm, which added to the charm of the experience.

Where to Stay

The heart of Terra Dominicata is an old monastery, lovingly restored and transformed into a luxurious complex. Our stay here was flawless in every way. Adding to the charm, the property is also home to a great winery. We had the pleasure of indulging in a wine tasting and bringing back some bottles home.

What to do

If you're not into wine, this might not be your ideal destination, but for enthusiasts, it's a must-visit ! Priorat is a wine lover's haven with numerous tasting options. We enjoyed Terra Dominicata's wines and also heard great things about Bodega de Clos Mogador, Coca i Fito and Clos Galena.

WINE TASTINGS

Priorat, Spain

A must-visit! This little village feels like you are in the Grand Canyon, (but you're still in Spain!) It's the perfect spot for climbing enthusiasts and an ideal place to catch a breathtaking sunset. If you go, don't miss the panoramic terrace of Terrazza Montsant. We had a drink there, just the two of us, and it was a truly magical experience.

What to Taste

We stumbled upon El Celler de l'Aspic just before reaching our hotel when hunger struck us on the road. This gastronomic restaurant offered meticulously crafted, high-quality dishes. Their extensive wine list featured a wide selection of local wines from the region. A delightful culinary experience that unexpectedly enhanced our journey.

Falset, Priorat

Our hotel manager's first recommendation was El Rebost de la Cartoixa, and one sentence immediately won us over: "this place is like eating at your grandmother's house." True to the description, it was a heartwarming experience with a 20€ menu per person, encompassing starters, mains, desserts, and wine—all of which were an absolute delicious!

Escaladei, Priorat

This restaurant is known to have a top-notch wine list, with a focus on Priorat wines, and an enchanting view of Falset village.  Although we didn't get the chance to go during our visit, we can't wait to experience it next time.
