TRAVEL GUIDES

OUR GUIDE TO COMO

Lake Como has an undeniable air of old-world glamour, where every corner whispers stories of the past that, once you've experienced them, stay with you. Our first trip really set the tone for what has now become a tradition. Every time we visit, it feels like coming home. We go back to our favorite villages, lunch places by the water, and peaceful drive routes through the scenery.

There’s something truly cinematic about the lake: the cypress trees lining the shore, the soft golden light… it’s like stepping into a postcard. And amidst it all, you can’t help but keep an eye out, wondering if you’ll bump into George Clooney casually strolling out of his villa, Aperol spritz in hand.

If you're thinking of making it a day trip from Milan, it's super doable (just an hour by car or train). But honestly, the magic of Como is in taking your time. Rent a car, or a Vespa if you can, and drive those winding roads that hug the lake. The real charm is in exploring and letting yourself get lost, in the best way.

For the best experience, we highly recommend going off-season and during the week, if possible. Not only will you save yourselves from sky-high prices, but you’ll also skip crowds, (especially in Bellagio). It will make your stay much more enjoyable.

Lake Como is not exactly the most laid-back destination, but behind all the glitz and sophistication, there are hidden spots that have stayed true to their roots for generations, offering a taste of lake authenticity. We’ve written this guide with that balance in mind, trying to give a bit of everything, but always staying true to real, authentic Italian charm.

Where to Stay

Torno, Como

From 200€ per night

Our go-to spot, perfectly nestled in Torno. It’s right on the water, offering stunning views and a level of comfort that comes with very reasonable price for the location. If you’re arriving by car, they’ll have you park outside the village and then pick you up in a jeep, navigating through the narrow streets and steep stairs - really authentic! The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming. While we love everything about it, we’d skip dinner there and explore other local options instead.

Torno, Como

From 1000€ per night

Sleek, elegant, and designed to perfection by Patricia Urquiola. Perched right on the water, this hotel offers jaw-dropping views that you’ll find hard to tear yourself away from. The service is impeccable: warm but never overbearing. The place is exclusive but steering away from flashy clichés or over-the-top showiness. It’s definitely a splurge, but if you’re celebrating something special Il Sereno delivers. If you’re not staying the night, book at least for an aperitivo.

Bellagio, Como

C’A SPIGA

From 100€ per night

For a stay that feels like stepping into the lake’s authentic soul, Ca’ Spiga is the go-to choice. Nestled in a quaint lakeside town, this charming old family house offers stunning views of the water and an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. The homemade breakfasts, and local delicacies can be savored on the terrace overlooking the lake. It is a bit off the beaten path but a way to connect with the real Como.

Cernobbio, Como

From 800€ per night

Villa d’Este is the ultimate Lake Como icon. Once a bishop’s retreat, now a luxurious escape, it’s rich in history, art, and elegance. You won’t be allowed in without a reservation, but it’s absolutely worth booking a table for lunch or dinner in the outdoor area or on the sundeck to get a taste of the magic. If you get the chance to stay, the hotel has an exclusive boat concierge that can take you on a private tour around the lake, including hidden spots not accessible by car.

Moltrasio, Como

HOTEL PASSALACQUA

From 1000€ per night

An instant classic since its recent opening in 2022, this sumptuous, elegant sister hotel to the famous Grand Tremezzo was once the home of the famous composer Bellini. With 24 rooms, spectacular gardens, and a gorgeous greenhouse pool area designed by JJ Martin, it’s the epitome of cool luxury. The staff will make your wishes come true, allowing you to enjoy meals wherever you desire. Breakfast in the rose garden, anyone?

Oliveto Lario, Como

AL MOLO 5

From 200€ per night

Oliveto Lario has a timeless charm, with its narrow alleys and small harbor, making it the perfect setting for Al Molo 5. This boutique hotel in Vassena offers five lakefront rooms, two suites with dual water views, and two apartments, one with a garden. There’s a sun terrace facing the lake and mountains, a small gym, and a wellness area with a sauna and jacuzzi. They also organize boat tours on limousines or Venetian taxis. Prices change a lot depending on the season and the day.

Lario, Como

VILLA LARIO

From 700€ per night

The arrival begins with a ride in a glass elevator, and the magic is immediate. Villa Làrio is a suite-only sanctuary perched on the shores of the "Lario," as the ancient Romans called Lake Como. The views are next-level, especially from the infinity pool that reflects the mountains, or the private dock where you can dive into the lake or hop on a boat. There are no TVs in the rooms, because who needs screens when the view steals the show?

Pigra, Como

LARIUM BED & BREAKFAST

From 200€ per night

This little B&B in Pigra is such a find. Tucked up in the mountains, it’s got two rooms, both with breathtaking lake views. There’s a sauna, a hot tub, and a breakfast spread that’s fresh and local. You can start scenic hikes from the house with views of Lake Como and Lake Lugano. The nearby funicular whisks you down to the lake quickly (though it stops early, so plan ahead), but with great restaurants nearby, you might not even need to leave the mountain.

Lario, Como

THE WRITER’S NEST, RENTAL

From 800€ per night

The ultimate hidden getaway on the lake. Como often evokes images of grand palaces, vast villas, and luxurious hotels that can feel almost intimidating. But, in contrast, we’ve found this secret gem available for rent: cosy, picturesque and very intimate. A retreat built in the 1800s with three bedrooms. The interior is vintage with a library and large glass doors opening onto a private dock. Accessible only by boat, private transfers are available on request.

What to do

WALK AROUND CERNOBBIO

In Cernobbio, you can walk along the lakeside promenade, stop for a gelato, or follow Viale Geno all the way to Villa Geno for some amazing views. It’s also home to Villa d’Este, one of the most iconic and luxurious spots on Lake Como, and Villa Erba, a beautiful historic villa that often hosts events. The little town itself is charming, with a relaxed vibe that makes it perfect for a morning or afternoon by the water.

Cernobbio, Como

OLD TOWN COMO

People usually rush straight to the lake and miss Como’s old town, which is a shame because it’s full of charm. The cobblestone streets, city walls, and little hidden piazzas make it feel like a step back in time. Start at Piazza del Duomo to see the beautiful Gothic cathedral, then explore the alleys filled with boutiques, cafes, and gelaterias. Don’t skip Piazza San Fedele with its Romanesque basilica:  a great spot to sit with an espresso; or a quick visit to Pastificio GILIO.

VISIT TORNO

Torno is one of our absolute favorite spots on the lake. It’s tiny, with a little square, a couple of fishing boats, one or two restaurants, and a small church. There aren’t many people, so it’s always peaceful and relaxed. It’s a quick stop, but totally worth it for the charm and quiet. Plus, there’s a ferry stop, so you can easily hop across the lake to Moltrasio, just a short ride away. While you’re there, don’t miss the beautiful Church of San Martino.

Torno, Como

VILLA BALBIANELLO

Probably the most famous villa on Lake Como, known for its stunning location and breathtaking views. This elegant 18th-century mansion with an incredible garden, has hosted writers and travelers throughout history and has also been featured in numerous films, adding to its fame. To visit, book tickets in advance. We did the guided tour, and honestly, it made all the difference. Without it, we would have missed so much about the villa's history and charm. Totally worth it!

Leno, Como

VILLA OLMO

Another stunning villa in Como, neoclassical and built between 1782 and 1787 by architect Simone Cantoni for the Odescalchi family. This imposing eighteenth-century residence, sober and elegant, opens up with an Italian garden, with attention to the smallest details and with direct access to the lake. Over the years, it’s welcomed notable figures like Napoleon, Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Ugo Foscolo.

Cernobbio, Como

VILLA CARLOTTA

A breathtaking spot with a panoramic view of the lake, known for both its impressive art collection and vast botanical garden. The terraced garden surrounds the villa, featuring over 500 plant species, from flowers to cedars, olive trees, and bamboo, all thriving in the mild climate. There's also a citrus greenhouse, now a museum showcasing ancient agricultural tools. The villa, though grand, feels almost small compared to its sprawling park.

Tremezzina, Como

VISIT VARENNA

Varenna is a town loved for its romantic atmosphere and picturesque houses. One of its main attractions is definitely Villa Monastero, an ancient 13th-century convent that’s been transformed into a house-museum. It’s surrounded by a stunning park and botanical garden that stretches along the lake for a couple of kilometers. Getting there is relatively easy as there’s a train station in town, or you can also hop on a boat from Bellagio for a scenic ride across the lake.

Varenna, Como

TOUR AROUND THE LAKE

Booking a boat tour around Lake Como is a must. The best views are from the water, where you can spot those jaw-dropping villas - some you can only reach by boat, like Villa La Casinella, our favorite to daydream about. Sometimes, the beauty of these places is even more enchanting when viewed from afar, with just a little bit of imagination… And don't miss out on the charming town of Nesso and its beautiful bridge. And for the ultimate film experience?Go for a Riva boat.

Como, Como

What to Taste

Torno, Como

€€€

Vapore is one of the spots we always hit on our first day in Como. It has this old-school charm, with a restaurant feel that takes you back to the times when hotels had their own dining rooms. The outside seating is super romantic, even when it’s cold they have heaters, so you can still enjoy the lake view. The food is solid, and the wine doesn’t disappoint. Yes, the prices are on the higher side, but it’s totally worth it for the vibe and the location.

TRATTORIA DEL FAGIANO

Moltrasio, Como

Trattoria del Fagiano is the kind of place that feels like eating at your nonna’s, serving up hearty, classic Lombardy mountain dishes like pizzoccheri, polenta taragna, and tagliatelle with venison ragu. Everything is simple, comforting, and great quality. Just keep in mind, they close super early at 1:30 p.m., so we missed it last time. Next time, we’ll be sure to plan ahead! Word is, the table by the window is the one to ask for.

Bellagio, Como

€€

Finding a sunny, lakeside restaurant in Bellagio is surprisingly tricky, but the terrace of Hotel Florence one to go! The setting is adorable, with wisteria in spring and pink napkins. The food is good too. We tried finding something new on our second visit but ended up back here, it really felt like the best option. Just keep in mind, Bellagio’s touristy nature means the prices are a bit high for what you get, and they’re quick to serve and hand you the bill to turn over tables…

Laglio, Como

€€

We stopped by Bottega da Luciano once for a quick coffee, but it’s also said to be a great spot for aperitivo! It’s the kind of place where you can completely unwind in a unique setting, whether you’re just grabbing a drink with a delicious little salumi platter enjoying a meal with local wines or picking up some treats from the shop. Don’t miss a chat with the legendary Lucio while you’re there!

LA COLOMBETTA

Como, Como

€€

We haven’t made it to La Colombetta yet, but it’s on our list, especially for a cosy winter night. They’re known for their fregola and super fresh fish. It’s classic ristorazione comasca: traditional flavors with all the charm of the region. We heard, if you call a couple of days in advance, you can even ask for their special trifle, made by the lovely ladies who run the restaurant. Definitely worth saving for the right moment, when you’re spending a night in Como’s Old Town.

Cernobbio, Como

€€€

One of those places that looks from an old glamorous movie. Located in the heart of the town of Cernobbio, this elegant spot has a rich history, having been around since the early 1900s. It’s part of the famous Harry's Bar legacy, originally born in Venice, but it has its own special charm by the lake. The setting is classic and sophisticated, with plush interiors, marble floors, and views over the stunning waters of the lake of course.

Brienno, Como

€€€

If you're looking for something very refined and elegant, Crotto dei Platani won't disappoint. Recommended by a friend who grew up in the region, this place offers a high-end experience. The charming courtyard is perfect in the warmer months, but inside is just as beautiful if you ask for a table by the large glass windows. Impeccable service and food. You can even arrive or leave by boat via their private pontoon, for an even more glamorous experience.

Nesso, Como

The real deal! We went for dinner, walked down the stairs in Nesso with no lights... then finally, we found the trattoria, all lit up. The service was so warm, and they brought us a bottle of wine (included in the menu) as soon as we sat down. Then came the most local food: fresh lake fish and the most delicious rice with sage and butter. Sounds simple, but it was incredible! Highly recommend it! If you go during the day, there’s a special table with the best view, so be sure to ask for it.

LA MOLTRASINA 1902

Moltrasio, Como

Founded in 1902, the historic Moltrasina Consumers' Cooperative has long been a cultural and social hub. Recently renovated, it now returns to the community with renewed appeal. A historic Moltrasio landmark, this place offers classic trattoria dishes, pizzas, and focaccias, reflecting its rich baking tradition. Like its renovation, the menu reinterprets Lake Como’s culinary heritage. One of its iconic dishes is the risotto with perch.

OSTERIA DEL GALLO

Como, Como

In Via Vitani, one of the most authentic streets of the historic center stands one of the last true osterias in Como: Osteria del Gallo. It has been run with care for the last 41 years by Giuseppe de Toma and his wife Rosanna. On entering you are immediately struck by the sense of tradition: wooden furniture, chequered tablecloth and numerous paintings on the walls. The menu changes daily featuring homely meals from the region: pizzocheri, soup, polenta, trippa, ossobuco…

UNA FINESTRA SUL LAGO

Carate Urio, Como

€€

Una Finestra Sul Lago comes highly recommended by our friend from Como, though we haven’t made it there yet. They offer a true eno-gastronomic experience and operate in two shifts. Highly recommended by Italian sources and definitely on the list for next time!

LO SCALO

Cremia, Como

"Lo Scalo" means boat stop, symbolizing a desire to once again become a destination worth remembering. With a thoughtful selection of furnishings and music, the bar harmonizes with the surrounding natural beauty rather than overpowering it. For Andrea, the founder, creating a truly memorable experience goes beyond maintaining an inviting and well-curated space, it requires crafting drinks and dishes that tell a story, leaving a lasting impression on every visitor.

ENOTECA CANTINA FOLLIE

Tremezzina, Como

€€

Enoteca Cantina Follie has been highly recommended, and it’s definitely worth checking out! Nothing basic or touristy here. The owner is meant to be super knowledgeable, always suggesting excellent wines from an impressive wine list with both local and international options. You’ll also find delicious and abundant local charcuterie boards. It seems like a great option for an aperitivo, lunch, or dinner if you're in the area.

TRATTORIA SAN BIAGIO

Parzano, Como

Just a few kilometers from Como is this trattoria with interiors typical of the nineteen seventies. Danilo and his assistant Ibrahim offer a cuisine linked to the landscape of the local area, updated daily through their continuous search for best products, bringing only selected cheeses, cured meats and vegetables to the tables. Signature dishes that are always on the menu at Trattoria San Biagio include 'Scottatini di Cuore', skewers of marinated beef heart.
