TRAVEL GUIDES

OUR GUIDE TO PUGLIA

VALLE D’ITRIA

Puglia. Just saying the name feels like the warmth of a sunbeam on your face. The heel of Italy’s boot is raw, authentic, and effortlessly beautiful, filled with minimalist white villages, olive groves stretching to the horizon, and turquoise seas.

For this guide, we’re focusing on the Valle d’Itria and its little towns, leaving the Salento area and Lecce for another adventure.

In northern Puglia, life moves at its own pace. You’ll see grandmothers sitting in the shade, expertly rolling orecchiette by hand and men, gathering in small clusters outside cafés. There’s a quiet pride in every detail, from the care taken with local ingredients to the way history feels alive in these streets.

This is a land of rich, grassy olive oil, the freshest seafood, and taralli. You can’t leave without trying orecchiette with cime di rapa, letting burrata melt in your mouth or tasting the soft sweetness of tette delle monache.

And yet, Puglia is more than what you see or taste. It’s a feeling, an experience that lingers long after your visit. It invites you to slow down, experience life’s simple pleasures, and lose yourself in its timeless charm.

So pack your favorite linen shirt, sunglasses, and a few good books, and leave the rigid itineraries at home. Puglia isn’t about checking things off a list; it’s an open invitation to wonder. And trust us, it’s one invitation you’ll be glad you accepted.

What to do

VISIT "LE SIGNORE DELLE ORECHIETTE"

In the streets of Bari Vecchia, you’ll discover a pasta that's much more than just food: orecchiette. This iconic dish is a true symbol of Puglia’s rich culinary tradition. As you wander the narrow alleys, you'll see local women carefully shaping the dough into tiny, ear-like pieces. With hands that move as if guided by generations, they turn simple ingredients into something extraordinary. It’s not just about making pasta; it’s about craft, community, love and the soul of Puglia.

Bari, Puglia

OSTUNI

Ostuni is one of our absolute favorites in Puglia. Known as "The White City" because of its stunning white buildings, it sits on a hill with beautiful views all around. The walls have some of the best views you can find of the surrounding coutryside. On a clear day, you can see the sea from here and this is also one of the best spots in the city for sunrise. The old town has narrow, hilly streets and lots of little alleys, making it a joy to explore and get lost in.

Ostuni, Puglia

POLIGNANO A MARE

Polignano a Mare is a place you shouldn't miss when visiting Puglia. It has the most beautiful views, with cliffs overlooking the sea and a beautiful old town. In the summer, it gets really busy, especially at Lama Monachile, the famous beach you’ll see in most photos. If you go then, be ready for big crowds, but the town is still full of charm. The light early in the morning or at sunset makes it even more special, with a soft glow over the white buildings and blue water.

Polignano a Mare, Puglia

GROTTAGLIE

Grottaglie is known as the town of ceramics, and it’s a paradise for anyone who loves handcrafted pieces. We came here with friends and spent hours exploring every ceramic shop, amazed by the variety and craftsmanship. Each of us found something special to take home, and we even ordered full sets from Nicola Fasano, which they later shipped to us. One recommendation: make sure to check opening times and organise accordingly.

Grottaglie, Puglia

LIDO BAMBU

In this part of Italy, many beaches aren’t public but instead have “lidi”- private beach clubs where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for the day. The sea here is the Adriatic, with crystal-clear water and plenty of large open beaches along the coast. We spent a day at Lido Bambu, a nice beach club where we could relax in total comfort. The setup was comfortable, the atmosphere lovely, and the food was  good too.

Savelletri, Puglia

ALBEROBELLO

Alberobello is famous for its trulli, the unique white stone houses with conical roofs that make the town look like something out of a fairytale. It’s one of the most touristy villages in Puglia, so be prepared for big crowds. If you go during peak hours, it can feel a bit like Disneyland, which is a shame because the town has so much charm. It’s worth visiting very early in the morning when it’s quieter. The shops are also quite touristy, but even so, the town is still lovely.

Alberobello, Puglia

ABBAZIA DI SAN VITO

A charming seaside abbey with a breathtaking view of the Adriatic, Abbazia di San Vito is the perfect spot for a long, lazy lunch, preferably with a plate of fresh seafood and a crisp glass of white wine. The atmosphere is very Italian, with plenty of locals enjoying the scene. Make sure to swim, before or after your meal, into the surrounding swimming areas, where the water is crystal clear and irresistibly inviting.

Polignano a Mare, Puglia

LOCOROTONDO

Locorotondo means "round place," named after the circular layout of its historic center. With charming alleys, whitewashed houses, and flower-filled balconies, it’s a beautiful town to wander through. Unlike its more famous neighbors, Locorotondo has a calm, almost dreamlike atmosphere, making it feel like a more quiet escape. If you have time for one more stop in Puglia, this one is definitely worth it.

Locorotondo, Puglia

TORRE GUACETO

We didn’t have time to visit, but Torre Guaceto is a WWF-protected nature reserve about 30 minutes from Ostuni, known for its unspoiled coastline and diverse ecosystem. Stretching over 8 kilometers, it includes sandy beaches, dunes, and a marine reserve home to sea turtles! There are no facilities, so bring a sandwich and plenty of water. For the best experience, we heard you should walk past the shuttle drop-off point to find a more secluded spot away from the crowds.

Locorotondo, Puglia

What to Taste

Torre Canne, Puglia

Albachiara has a perfect seaside location, so make sure to ask for a table by the water rather than in the back to fully enjoy the view. The setup is rustic and simple: plastic chairs, no frills, just great seafood. Here, it’s all about quality: a crudo mix with sea urchins (must), cozze, swordfish bombette, crostino with raw shrimp and burrata, cavatelli ai frutti di mare... After the feast, a nice walk is highly recommended, you’ll need it. PS: this is a great spot for large groups too!

Savelletri , Puglia

Il Principe del Mare has that effortless vibe, laid-back but with incredible views and seriously good food. Lunch here is all about the freshest seafood, prepared with care. Beyond the food, what really makes this place special is the warm and welcoming service. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re always happy to help and somehow manage to leave you with a smile every time.

We came here with friends, and it was one the most memorable dinners of all: from the setting to the food and wine, everything was just perfect. The incredibly talented Giorgia Eugenia Goggi left a career in fashion to become a chef and is now at the helm of Masseria Moroseta, where people travel from all over Italy to experience her cooking. Every dish is as beautiful as it is delicious, a true feast for both the eyes and the palate. We’d give it a 20/10.

Polignano a Mare, Puglia

We were planning to go to La Colonna, but it was closed, so we ended up at La Veranda instead, and what a nice surprise. Right next to the Abbazia di San Vito, it has a super relaxed atmosphere and turned out to be a great experience. Good food, good prices, no fuss, just a lovely place to enjoy a meal in a peaceful setting. Also, a slightly less touristy spot since it’s a few kilometers from the center of Polignano.

Ostuni, Puglia

€€€

This is one of the more well-known restaurants in Puglia, but it’s definitely worth a visit, especially in the low season when you can truly enjoy its excellent pastas. Founded in 1983, the restaurant is set in two unique spaces carved into the ancient rock of Ostuni. For the full experience, ask for a table in the grotto. We went in October, when the town is much quieter, and it felt so cosy. In summer, we passed by and saw it completely packed, so timing makes all the difference.

Ostuni, Puglia

€€

Borgo Antico is the place everyone flocks to in Ostuni: a quirky bar set in a winding street, offering one of the best sit-down views in the city. From this spot, you can take in the lively atmosphere of the town while enjoying both Ostuni and its surroundings on the horizon. With cool music, delicious antipasti platters, and refreshing cocktails, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed aperitivo.

Martina Franca, Puglia

We came here with family, and we all loved it. This charming little restaurant overlooks the beautiful Itria Valley. Giuseppe, the third generation running the place, continues his grandfather’s legacy, who opened it years ago. While the menu has stayed pretty much the same since then, offering traditional Apulian dishes, the small, simple menu ensures everything is fresh and delicious. Definitely try the typical orecchiette with polpettina and sugo di pomodoro - it's a must!

Castellana, Puglia

€€

We came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday and couldn’t have chosen a better spot! The lunch started with a complimentary appetizers and a glass of prosecco, setting the tone for a fantastic meal. We enjoyed a tasting menu with risottos, pastas, and meats, each dish a delight and beautifully presented. The restaurant is tucked in a small alley so it’s a bit tricky to find, but absolutely worth the detour!

IL CORTILETTO

Il Cortiletto is always full - a true sign of success. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a table, but with all the glowing reviews, it hardly feels like a risk to recommend it. The restaurant is located behind a discreet exterior but the interior terrace looks very cut ! They keep things simple with a carefully curated menu of authentic Apulian dishes. A short menu is always a good sign, and here, it guarantees fresh, well-executed flavors that locals and visitors alike rave about.

Speziale, Puglia

Ostuni, Puglia

A small bistro that expertly blends traditional Apulian flavors with a modern twist. In a tiny space, the talented young chefs craft dishes that honor local ingredients: salumi, cheeses, and fresh vegetables…while bringing contemporary creativity to each plate. The menu features a carefully curated selection of wines (at least 30% of which are natural), along with cocktails and craft beers. Here simple ingredients transformed into something extraordinary.

PASTICCERIA DA PASQUALE

Pasticceria da Pasquale is a beloved spot in the heart of the town, known for its traditional Apulian pastries and timeless recipes. One of their signature treats is the "tette delle monache," a delicious pastry whose name translates to "nun's breasts." Despite the name, these sweet delights are anything but provocative. They are delicious treats and filled with rich cream, typically made from ricotta or pastry cream, and dusted with powdered sugar. A must try when in Puglia!

Ostuni, Puglia

ANTICALAMA

At Anticalama, dinner feels like a scene from a movie, set under grapevines, with a view of the lama at the heart of the masseria. You’re surrounded by olive trees, and at night, little lights twinkle everywhere, creating a charming, rustic countryside vibe. The food is very good (again, typical Apulian) and the setting is perfect for a romantic evening or a lively meal with a large group of friends.

Fasano, Puglia

TONY BAR

If you know, you know: Tony Bar is a local institution. We didn’t get the chance to go, but it’s said to be a must. Not a romantic spot or a fancy restaurant, quite the opposite in fact. It’s the kind of place where you grab a quick bite, either as a pit stop on your roadtrip or on your way back from the sea. Their famed for their panzerotti: deep-fried pockets of dough filled with molten mozzarella and tomato sauce (or other variations). Crispy on the outside, gooey inside , yum!

Speciale, Puglia

CIBUS

Cibus is another charming restaurant that blends the authentic flavors of Puglia with a modern twist. Situated in the maze of Ceglie’s historic alleys, it greets you with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Book a table in the intimate inner courtyard, where you can enjoy a menu filled with delights like small ricotta with toasted almonds, salads, stracciatella with truffles, carpaccio with mushrooms… For the main course, the tender lamb with roast potatoes is a must-try.

GROTTA PALAZZESE

One of the most breathtaking locations in the world, nestled inside a natural cave in Polignano a Mare. The food is good, but it's the setting that steals the show. Now the place has become one of the most Instagrammed spots, and usually, that would be reason enough to make us look the other way. But can you really pass up on a place just because it’s so well-known? The beauty of Grotta Palazzese is an experience that deserves to be lived, not just admired through a screen.

PESCARIA

Pescaria, born in Polignano a Mare, quickly become famous for its fresh seafood served in a casual street-food style. What started as a small fish market offering delicious seafood sandwiches soon grew into a beloved spot that has expanded with locations across Italy. Despite its success around the country, the original Pescaria in Polignano remains the OG iconic SPOT, but often with long queues of eager visitors…

Polignano a Mare, Puglia

PICCI BAR

Bar Picci is a cute, retro spot with an '80s vibe, located in a picturesque lively square. With its nostalgic atmosphere, it really feels like stepping into another time. These days, retro vibes are so on-trend that you can't help but wonder if it's the real deal or just an attempt to capture an old-school charm for cool factor... Regardless, it works: the Bar is a hit, offering great drinks and a welcoming vibe that keeps people coming back.

Carovigno, Puglia

URBAN

Urban is the place to go in Bari for spaghetti all'assassina, a fiery, delicious dish where spaghetti is cooked directly in the sauce until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This modern spot brings metropolitan dining to the city center, offering convenience and an appealing location. Reviews suggest that enhancing the ambiance could improve the overall experience, still,  the restaurant is praised for its professionalism, quick service, and reasonably priced dishes.
